Flower Arranging is a typical Montessori activity that works several skills; pouring water with the funnel in the vase, using scissors to cut the stems of the flowers, inserting the stems into the vase with care… Also in this activity come into play the senses of smell, touch and sight.
One of the basic ideas of the Montessori philosophy is that if children are surrounded by beautiful and nice things from an early age, they will learn to value and care for them, so with this simple activity children learn more than it might appear; they learn that it’s nice to have a vase of flowers on the table, that it’s worth taking the time to do it properly, that flowers are delicate and must be handled gently, that when there is a vase of flowers on the table one needs to be careful not to make it fall…
If we want to take this activity a little further, we can name the parts of the plant and flower, find the name of the plant if we don’t know it… this way we will also be including a little botany lesson.
Did you think you could learn so much by doing something so simple?
